GARDASIL is used to protect against 4 types of HPV (types 6, 11, 16 and 18). There are many different types of HPV; some cause no harm, others can cause diseases of the genital area. For most people the virus goes away on its own. When HPV virus does not go away, it can develop into cervical cancer, precancerous lesions, or genital warts, depending on the HPV type.
Any male or female of any age who takes part in any kind of sexual activity that involves genital contact is at risk for HPV; however, the vaccine is indicated for girls and women between 11 and 26 years of age. For maximum efficacy, it is recommended that girls receive the vaccine prior to becoming sexually active. However, women who were already infected with 1 or more of the 4 HPV types targeted by the vaccine were protected from clinical disease caused by the remaining HPV types in the vaccine.
Gardasil is a recombinant vaccine (contains no live virus) that is given as three injections over a six-month period. Each vaccine costs $120.00 ($360.00 for the series) if administered at SHCS. Please check with your insurance provider for coverage. If it is not covered, make an appointment at SHCS.
